Probably hundreds of years ago a huge section of the canyon wall let loose and slid down, leaving the cliffs at the top of the canyon behind.

The cliffs in the upper left-hand section of the pic are the product of a massive landslide that happened probably hundreds of years ago. You can see where the landslide ended up in the bottom of the canyon.
